We talked to Patrick Walter Thomsen, co-founder of the company Young Consult, who is studying his master's degree at CBS. Young Consult works with attracting, onboarding and motivating young employees, also known as Millennials. One of the main points from the episode is that we need to remember that there is a difference between being young and generational differences.
Changes in the workplace
Our society is constantly changing. Every day something new happens. In the workplace, procedures change from day to day, and especially when it comes to employees, radical changes are happening all the time. Young employees, also known as Millennials, are very different from the older generation. According to Patrick, Millennials have no problem getting feedback via text message, on Slack or on Facebook because they are in more places mentally than the older generation who prefer face-to-face feedback.

Gamification
Another factor that managers today need to consider is gamification. Young employees have grown up with games, and through games they are used to getting recognition in the form of trophies, points, etc. There is always something to chase and you know when you reach the goal. But the question is, should we use gamification at all? Patrick says that the answer is both yes and no, because we can't change our upbringing, and therefore as a leader you have to understand that you can't change gamification because it's the future.
What is mentoring?
The big challenge is to incorporate gamification into everyday life – but according to Patrick, the answer could be to introduce mentoring. A mentoring scheme would be a great tool to reach out to your young employees. A mentoring scheme gives you the opportunity to talk both professionally and personally with your Millennials in the company, and through this scheme, trust is built between both parties, which makes it easier to communicate feedback.
