Psychological safety

Why is it important?

When people feel safe, they engage more fully in collaboration, contributing more of themselves. This fosters innovation, well-being, shared ownership, and productivity. We focus on cultivating behaviors that build psychological safety within organizations.

Psychological Safety: A Foundation for Growth and Wellbeing

Psychological safety is a key driver of both wellbeing and growth in the workplace. When employees and leaders feel safe, they are more likely to take responsibility and contribute ideas – which strengthens the overall development of the organisation.

Organisations with high psychological safety often experience lower turnover, greater employee satisfaction and a better ability to adapt to new challenges. In teams and organisations where psychological safety is present, people feel free to share ideas, questions, concerns and mistakes without fear of negative consequences.

To us, psychological safety is about cultivating a culture where this sense of safety forms the basis for a positive spiral of engagement and trust. It enhances innovation, productivity and shared ownership across the organisation.

A Continuous Focus

Psychological safety doesn’t happen overnight – and it doesn’t sustain itself. It requires ongoing attention to become a natural part of everyday work life. We believe that safety grows in a culture where everyone dares to speak openly and take initiative without fear.

Our approach focuses on creating an atmosphere where risk-taking and creativity can flourish, supporting both individual development and the organisation’s overall value.

What Can You Achieve with a Culture of Psychological Safety?

  • Stronger ownership – Employees take greater responsibility because they feel valued and safe.
  • Effective problem-solving – Openness around mistakes and challenges leads to faster and better solutions.
  • Focus on learning – A psychologically safe environment encourages curiosity and a willingness to learn.
  • Stronger relationships – Trust enables honest and authentic relationships between colleagues and leaders, making it easier to collaborate and handle conflict constructively.
  • Constructive feedback culture – Feedback is given and received openly, supporting ongoing development.
  • Improved wellbeing – A safe working environment reduces stress and increases employee satisfaction.
  • Greater innovation – Employees dare to experiment and contribute new ideas without fear of failure.

How Do We Support You?

At Feedwork, we help you build and implement a culture of psychological safety tailored to your organisation. We understand that every organisation is unique, and we work closely with you to identify the solutions that best support your needs and goals.

Three Elements to Strengthen Psychological Safety

When supporting our clients in building psychological safety, we draw on the work of researcher Amy Edmondson, who highlights three key elements. We work actively with these areas to ensure psychological safety is deeply embedded in your organisation:

  • Framing – This involves setting clear goals and expectations within the team. It also includes setting expectations for how mistakes and uncertainty are handled, so employees know it's okay to take risks and learn from failure.
  • Inviting participation – Creating a space where everyone is encouraged to share ideas, questions and concerns. When people feel their input is welcome and valued, engagement increases, and everyone feels like a vital part of the team.
  • Responding productively – This means responding rather than reacting. Meet each other with respect and answer in a constructive way that creates a safe environment where people feel motivated to speak up and contribute.

Three Levels of Support: Inspire, Learn, Lead

We offer our services at three levels – Inspire, Learn and Lead – representing different depths of developmental and change processes. Depending on your resources, ambitions and available time, we can support you in different ways.

  • Shared language and new insights – If you're looking for inspiration and want to create a shared language around psychological safety, a workshop at the Inspire level can offer insights and practical tools. However, deeper anchoring often requires a more comprehensive approach.
  • Deep learning and long-term anchoring – For lasting change and a deeper implementation of psychological safety, we recommend a longer journey at the Learn or Lead level. Here, we work closely with you to ensure psychological safety becomes an integrated part of your organisational culture.

What is it all about?

When we work with organizational development, we focus on many different areas of effort: we build the competencies of key people, improve dynamics in leadership groups, adjust processes and workflows, open doors for more inclusive leadership styles, inspire employees to participate actively, define desired behaviors, support internal communication, and much more. Often this will be a multi-year collaboration, as major changes do not happen from day to day and require continuous follow-up.

What is it all about?

An organization's leaders will always be role models for employees, and the behavior of managers therefore has a big impact on how people behave around them. Therefore, when the culture needs to change and new habits need to be learned, it is crucial that leaders are able to drive the change. We help with this, among other things, by building learning skills, influencing the mindset of leaders and helping them to translate the new methods into everyday life.

What is it all about?

In well-functioning teams, the individual members contribute to the solution of the overall task, while constantly learning from each other and developing each other's competencies. This enables the entire team to develop and coordinate work in a way that produces strong results. In all well-functioning teams, there are certain competencies, agreements and habits that strengthen the community and ensure that cooperation works optimally. Which ones it is, however, can be very different from team to team. Therefore, we always start by delving into your particular situation and finding the key dynamics and processes that we need to work with to make your team work in the best possible way.
